Download a YouTube transcript in the format you need
A transcript download should fit the work you are doing next. A researcher usually needs readable words. A video editor needs words attached to times. PasteQuill offers TXT and SRT for these two jobs, using the same returned transcript as the source for both files.
Save your transcript in three steps
- Open the YouTube transcript generator and paste a single video link. Choose Get transcript and wait for the caption check.
- Read a few passages and check the source and language labels. Follow a timestamp to verify any important wording against the recording.
- Choose Download TXT or Download SRT beside the result. Find the saved file in your browser’s download location and open it in the application you intend to use.
If the browser opens a file as text instead of saving it, use its save command and preserve the original file extension. Check the filename after saving. A subtitle editor may not recognize a file accidentally named transcript.srt.txt.
Open a TXT download
TXT has no document styling or subtitle timing blocks. A plain text editor is enough to read it. You can also copy its contents into a writing app, search for a phrase or add your own headings. Keep the original file before making changes if you need an audit trail of your edits.
The export contains the transcript words in segment order, with spaces and paragraph separation for reading. It does not add the video title, source citation or a summary. Add that information to your working document yourself. For a study workflow, see the YouTube to text guide.
Read the structure of an SRT download
SubRip files are text files with a particular structure. A cue begins with its number, followed by the time range and the words to show. A blank line separates it from the next cue. For example, the first cue in our Apollo 11 transcript sample starts at zero on the sample’s own clock:
1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:11,000
Okay. I'm going to step off the LM now.The comma separates milliseconds from whole seconds. Preserve the arrow and time format when editing by hand. Subtitle software can usually edit these fields more safely than a general text editor. Check your editor’s import settings if it treats the file as ordinary text.
Check timing after importing subtitles
Import the SRT beside the matching video. Play the beginning, a point in the middle and the end. If every cue is late by the same amount, check whether your video has an extra introduction or a different starting point. If the difference grows through the recording, check whether you imported an edited or speed-adjusted version.
Downloading captions does not make them a perfect subtitle layout. Long cues may need line breaks or shorter display blocks. Names and technical terms still need review. Save your edited version under a new filename so the original download remains available for comparison.
If a download is unavailable
A file can only be exported after a transcript has been returned. A missing caption track, a restricted video or a service error is a retrieval problem, not a file-format problem. Changing TXT to SRT will not fix it. Follow the explanation shown by the tool before retrying.
Saved results expire after 24 hours. Export before that time if you need to keep the text. A download is a local copy; it will not update if the creator later corrects the video’s captions. Recheck the source when accuracy matters, and only reuse material you have permission to use.
FAQ
Why are there no timestamps in my TXT file?
TXT is deliberately a plain reading copy. Download SRT from the same result if you need start and end times. You do not need to submit the video again while its saved result is available.
Why does my SRT file show numbers and arrows?
Those are normal SubRip instructions. Each cue has a sequence number, a start time, an arrow, an end time and its subtitle text. Open the file in a subtitle editor to see it as timed captions.
Can I download the video or an MP3 here?
No. PasteQuill exports transcript text as TXT or SRT. It does not provide video files, audio files or a video with subtitles burned into the picture.
How long can I return to download a result?
Saved transcript text is available for 24 hours. Download while it is available. After expiry, submit the video again; retrieval then depends on the video's availability and current service limits.
